Introducing Babesicle (Baw-beh-see-clay)!

Hey there, welcome to Babesicle, a scrumptious blog dripping with fashion/food/lifestyle inspirations slash whatever I'm into at the moment. All on a stick for your reading pleasure!

For my first post, I want to share the first episode of The Fashion Fund, a new show with an understated, documentary style that resembles The September Issue more than the drama and cattiness of reality shows like Project Runway. The web series premiered today on Hulu (a gift from the fashion gods to the TV-less like myself!), and rather than being created for TV, it follows a process that's been in existence for years: the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund competition in which a board of fashion's most powerful players (Anna Wintour's invariably coiffed self is among them) select 10 semi-established American designers who need that little extra something (i.e. scrillaaa, and exposure of course) to stiletto them to the next level. The 10 selected designers are put through a series of tests including presentations, intimate studio visits and, of course, a fashion show to determine who wins the first prize of 300,000 and a mentorship from a team of fashion industry professionals.

What makes the show work is the lack of attitude we've come to expect when peering into an industry that is most often described as "cut-throat." The contestants are humble, likable, and hard-working. It's apparent that glamour takes a back seat as the opening shot is of a finalist walking to work on the graffiti-ed streets of Queens. Even the fashion moguls in charge of judging the applicants are shown in a very real light. Maybe I've just been brainwashed by movies like The Devil Wears Prada, but I was somewhat surprised that the meanest comment in the deliberation room, uttered by Wintour, was that one designer's line is"generic." Granted, that is sort of the kiss of death in the fashion world, but the conversation is fascinating nonetheless as it gives us a window into what it really takes to be worthy of investment.

I can't wait to see the next episode! Although I did skip ahead and watch all the four-minute previews of the next four episodes. Couldn't help myself. And I love that Pamela Love is on there! She's so interesting-looking and watchable.

On the music tip, this is the song that I'm obsessed with right now:

They do have an official video, but I think sometimes a video can detract from the music experience, and this is one of those times. Not hating on the low budge vid, it's just somehow better standing alone. Looove this dude's voice, inflection and saucy lyrics.

Lastly, the sunset from today's 80 degree January day. This could very well be my new mental happy place. Is it weird that whenever I think of the phrase, "happy place," I think of the snow cave from Fight Club with the penguin?

XOXO,
Babesicle

  1. Hi Girl, wow, what an opening to your first post. I love the graphics and your punchy-style writing. Yes, do keep it fresh and give it that "unedited" feel. As for the song, the first 30 seconds, it could play at a 007 Bond movie. Later in the song it reminds me of something "Wish" might play. Good luck!
